Looking forward with great excitement to Quadsquad. After today (Monday) it will be easier for me to contribute, as I am on deadline for the soccer publication today, always a toughie the morning after getting The Gold Sheet and TGS Extra completed on Sunday night.

Sports and politics are always a good mix, especially for journalists. I combine the two often when composing the weekly TGS football forecasts. For example, in this week's new TGS, I made note of how conservative Ty Willingham's new offense is at Washington ("Ty's new Husky attack is so conservative it looks to be designed by Antonin Scalia") , Stanford's unfamiliarity with the option attack it will confront at Navy ("Stanford sees the option about as often as Rush Limbaugh appears on Air America"), and the annual threat by Rice coach Kenny Hatfield that the Owls will throw the ball more this season ("We'll believe Hatfield's latest promise about an inproved Owl aerial game when we see Bob Novak and James Carville out on the town together"). Of course I am obligated to include references to pop culture at times, too, such as Bosie State's visit to Oregon State after that brutal trip to Georgia ("The trip to Corvallis will feel like a date with J Lo for the Broncos after their nightmare in Athens").

My exciting Labor Day will also consist of occasional glimpses at the New Mexico-UNLV game on ESPN this morning (we need the Lobos to cover that 14-point spread), and Ole Miss-Memphis after that. Truth be told, I am not going to waste much time with Miami-Florida State tonight. Despite all of those athletes on the field, I suspect the game will be as dull as the past few meetings between the two, dominated by defenses, and I expect a lower-scoring affair to be won, as usual, by the 'canes...
